Children's Book Week is over for another year...

Who’s that crossing my bridge? Grrrrrr!!!
Library patrons were frequently startled by this cry as they entered the library a couple of weeks ago. The ugly troll barking more questions at some rather excited groups of schoolchildren may have hinted at what was going on perhaps.
It was Children’s Book Week of course and with this years’ theme being “Across the story bridge” entry to the library via a special bridge complete with resident troll was how Leeton Shire Library began to celebrate.
Over one thousand schoolchildren and preschoolers braved the cold weather – and the troll – to come and celebrate this important week with us. They entertained us with their wonderful dramatic renditions of “The three billy goats gruff”, listened to one or two stories and searched the library for bridge related clues to enter our competition.
Awards were handed out as well to the schools who entered our Book Week poster competition with the trophy for best display awarded to Yanco Public School. Their fabulous artworks certainly added to the air of excitement in the library during the week.
It’s always an exhausting week with all staff declaring ‘never again’ when it’s over but of course it only takes a day or two before we are checking out next year’s theme and wondering what we will do.

Attention all young artists...

The Leeton Shire Youth Committee has received funding to organise a mental health project and has decided on an art competition, titled Express Yourself, with entries closing during National Youth Week.

Express Yourself is open to youth within Leeton Shire, with two categories for 12-16-year olds and 17-25-year olds. The competition closes on 12 April at 10am and entries will be displayed at an exhibition to be held on 14 April 2010.

Entrants have the chance to win some of the $500 worth of prizes on offer by entering an original artwork relating to the theme of ‘Express Yourself – Depression, Anxiety and Mental Health Issues Facing Local Youth’.

The project has come about through beyondblue, the national depression initiative, teaming up with the New South Wales National Youth Week 2010.

Youthbeyondblue’s main messages for young people are to:
• LOOK for the signs of depression and anxiety
• LISTEN to your friends’ experiences
• TALK about what’s going on
• SEEK HELP together.

Following the exhibition, the artwork will be photographed and contribute to a booklet which will include local mental health contacts and support services.
For more information about Express Yourself contact Leeton Shire Council Community Services Officer Jackson Goman on 6953 0955 or jacksong@leeton.nsw.gov.au

Catch You Later Leeton

Leeton Shire Council would like to remind residents that the Catch You Later Leeton program is still running on Friday and Saturday nights up to the end of January. The program provides discounted taxi fares and $5 vouchers for drinkers at participating licensed premises in Leeton.

Road Safety and Traffic Officer, Sandra Robinson explains, “the program was developed to encourage people that were going to drink to leave their cars at home so that they don’t have the temptation to drink and drive.”

“It works by users paying their full taxi fare to the licensed premises and then receiving a voucher from the taxi which entitles them to a return fare of just $1 plus a $5 discount voucher at the participating pub, club or hotel.”

“It’s great value and can save you more than just a taxi fare, it could save your license or your life.”

Catch You Later Leeton participating licensed premises are Hydro Tavern, Leeton Hotel, Yanco Hotel, Wade Hotel, Leeton and District Bowling Club, Chan’s Hong Kong Restaurant and Chung Hing Chinese Restaurant.

Each year drink driving is identified as a factor in around 18% of all fatal crashes in NSW, resulting in an average of around 105 deaths per year. In country areas this figure rises to around 32% of all fatal crashes.

Every year around 20,000 drink driving offences are committed and around 15,000 of these are at middle or high range.
